Short-term or sudden anxiety plays a coaching role by preparing the body to respond quickly and effectively to sudden situations or threats. This response enhances levels of alertness, concentration and physical readiness, allowing people to deal with difficult situations. But, when anxiety becomes chronic and persistent, it can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health.<br>From a scientific perspective, anxiety can be defined as the body\u2019s natural response to any physical, emotional, or psychological reaction. Anxiety expresses the way the body prepares to respond to situations that are considered important, adventurous or dangerous. This response occurs through the release of stress hormones, the main ones being adrenaline and cortisol. While these hormones are essential for short-term adaptation, persistently elevated cortisol levels can negatively affect multiple body systems.<br>Continued exposure to high levels of cortisol has obvious effects on the brain, including impaired memory and concentration, disrupted sleep patterns, increased anxiety and an increased risk of depression. The circulatory system is also affected, as chronic stress can cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease.<br>Stress can adversely affect the digestive tract by causing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can lead to abdominal cramps, pain, constipation and diarrhea. It may also weaken the immune system, resulting in an increased chance of infections. In addition, chronic stress upsets hormonal balance, which can lead to weight gain, decreased libido, persistent fatigue, menstrual irregularities and premature aging.<br>To minimize these health damages, it is essential to effectively control stress.
